The National Confederation of Dominican Workers (CNTD) and the Union Federation of Tourism Workers (Fesitratur) requested the National Wages Committee (CNS) convene a meeting to discuss a wage increase for tourism workers. They cannot wait any longer without an increase in their salaries.
They pointed out that tourism workers receive a minimum wage between RD$14,161 and RD$16,800, which is very different from non-sectorized workers.
Justo Carmona, president of Fesitratur, reported that as of April 1, wages were increased by 12%, taking them from RD$24,990 to RD$27,928. With 8% as of February 2026, wages will reach RD$29,998.
“We expect the hotel sector to make increases of at least 30%, so that it will be 10% above the increase made to non-sectorized workers,” he said.
According to Hoy, President Luis Abinader has been a champion of wage improvement in the country, and he hopes that he will intervene in favor of tourism workers.
He requested the President and the Minister of Labor, Eddy Olivares, to eliminate the differentiated wage rate, which allows them to pay a salary 20% lower than that received by non-sectorized workers. He considered that the gratuity should not be considered a salary compensation.
