Abinader highlights measures to curb Haitian migration

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader reaffirmed his administration’s strong stance on migration, emphasizing the numerous measures implemented since taking office to address the situation, particularly concerning Haiti. During his appearance on LA Semanal, he recalled an early meeting with then-President Jovenel Moïse, where they discussed key initiatives, including the construction of hospitals in border areas, the erection of a border wall, and improved immigration control efforts.

Abinader also underscored his decision at the 2022 Summit of the Americas to reject the Migration Treaty, a pact signed by all other participating leaders, including the U.S. president. He reiterated his belief that the agreement was not beneficial for the Dominican Republic. Additionally, he highlighted efforts to reduce irregular labor by providing financial support for equipment in key sectors like construction and agriculture.

The president emphasized his continued advocacy in international forums regarding Haiti’s crisis and confirmed that the Dominican Republic remains active in deportation efforts. He reported that thousands of Haitian immigrants are deported weekly, citing recent operations in areas like El Hoyo de Friusa and Mata Mosquito.
