Santo Domingo.- The Executive Branch is set to present a bill to the National Congress this week aimed at merging the Ministries of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPyD) and Finance. This announcement was made by Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, during an interview on the program Polihablando. He confirmed that various functions currently performed by these ministries will be reassigned to his office.
Paliza stated, “The bill is prepared and will be submitted soon. We’ve already commenced some mergers; for instance, the Familia Feliz housing program has been integrated into the Ministry of Housing. While some processes are complex and cannot be executed overnight, we are making progress,” he noted, emphasizing that adjustments regarding resources and staffing must be considered.
President Luis Abinader’s administration is actively pursuing the elimination and consolidation of certain government institutions to enhance the efficiency and modernization of public administration. While several legislative proposals have already been introduced, other initiatives are still pending. One significant proposal involves the merger of the Ministry of Education (Minerd) with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (Mescyt).
