Cotuí.- More than 2,500 employees and contractors from Barrick, Cormidom, and Falcondo gathered in Cotuí Park on Sunday to show their support for responsible mining practices that sustain thousands of jobs in the northern region and throughout the Dominican Republic.
The event, led by mining workers’ unions, featured the participation of Rafael (Pepe) Abreu, president of the National Confederation of Trade Union Unity (CNUS). Speakers highlighted the direct and indirect benefits that responsible mining brings to families and communities, emphasizing its contribution to local development.
Pepe Abreu noted that the support from workers reflects a growing recognition of mining’s role in improving livelihoods. Participants urged authorities to approve pending mining projects to expand employment opportunities and stimulate regional economic growth. The mining sector currently accounts for 1.4% of the country’s GDP and supports over 7,000 jobs nationwide.
