Santo Domingo — In the wake of the tragedy that occurred in the early morning of Tuesday, April 8, at the Jet Set nightclub, several hypotheses have been put forward as to the possible causes of the collapse of the roof that caused the death of 221 people.
As explained by Osiris de León, a geologist and academic who stressed the need for a forensic audit, “On the causes of the Jet Set collapse, there is still no forensic audit to express an opinion on the matter,” he said to Hoy Digital newspaper.
Possible causes of the collapse of the Jet Set
For his part, architect Edward Alcantara has mentioned possible structural failures that could have contributed to the collapse.
He also criticized the supervision and structural criteria, stressing the importance of rigorous inspections.
On her side, civil engineer Yulissa Merán explained that several causes can lead to the collapse of a structure, such as a roof. Among the main ones, she mentioned:
Merán stressed that multiple hypotheses have been put forward based on observations and technical knowledge in the specific case of the collapse of the Jet Set roof. However, she stressed the importance of conducting a rigorous analysis before issuing definitive conclusions. “Now we must pray for the owner and all those affected,” She empathized with the tragedy.
Support from the Academy of Sciences
The Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic has offered the authorities the support of its academic experts to clarify the causes of the collapse.
According to the president of the ACRD, Manuel Ramón Herrera Carbuccia, the investigation must be carried out with scientific rigor and objectivity.
“Our team is prepared to conduct a comprehensive study to accurately determine the factors that could trigger this unfortunate event, without falling into hasty judgments,” he said.
The Academy has stressed the importance of examining the technical, structural, and environmental conditions that could have influenced the collapse.
Government technical study
The Dominican government has ordered a technical study to be carried out to determine the causes of the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set discotheque. This tragedy left more than 200 people dead.
A team of national and international experts, coordinated by the National Office of Seismic Evaluation of Infrastructure and Buildings (ONESVIE), will carry out this analysis.
The study’s objective is to accurately understand what happened, improve safety protocols, prevent future tragedies, and strengthen construction standards in public spaces.
In addition, the process has been guaranteed to be carried out with total openness and respect for the independence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which is in charge of the judicial investigation.
