San Francisco, Dominican Republic.- Civic organizations of the country’s 3rd biggest city on Friday announced a 24-hour shutdown of all activities on February 18, to demand the resignation of mayor Felix Rodriguez, charged with embezzling more than RD$400 million.
The San Francisco (northeast) protesters also demand the start of a criminal trial without further delay, against the Mayor, a provincial leader of the ruling PLD party.
FALPO community group spokesman Raul Monegro called on all organizations to take part in the civic protest. "What the people expect has yet to materialize: That the cats and the kittens led by Felix Rodriguez to stand a criminal trial, with due process, condemned and his ill-gotten gains confiscated.”
Monegro warned that San Francisco will not rest until the "mafia" which he affirms operates in that City Council is dismantled.
He said corruption continues in full force in San Francisco. "We’re seeing that in the nearly three years during which a fraud in the millions was detected and a year after the Justice Ministry obtained the indictment against the corrupt who took the money from this city council, what the people want has yet to materialize.”
