Drop in U.S. travel to Europe favors the Caribbean

The travel of U.S. citizens to Europe has been threatened for several reasons, according to Hyatt, a chain with a strong presence in all the affected places. This is causing a diversion of this market to the Caribbean.

The reasons for the trend come from the fact that Americans fear feeling rejected in the Old Continent because of their perception of President Donald Trump’s tone and are frequently affected by the fact that tourism is not welcome in the face of protests against ‘over-tourism,’ overcrowding, or saturation in the main destinations.

Likewise, the third factor consolidating this transfer of demand from Europe to favor the Dominican Republic or Mexico is the customer’s lately greater sensitivity to price, which benefits shorter trips and closed budgets such as all-inclusive.

Cuba and Donald Trump’s government policies are also diverting an important part of the Canadian tourist market to Punta Cana and Cancun, in an unprecedented transfer of a large market from two destinations to two others in such a short time.

The Canadian boycott of the USA reaches a new record and historic drop in tourism. In April, car trips from Canada to the U.S. fell by 35%, and by plane by 20%. This downward trend follows declines in March and February, with drops of up to 32% in road trips and 23% in flights, as revealed by REPORTUR.mx.
