Grupo Puntacana launches large-scale organic composting system

Punta Cana.- Grupo Puntacana has launched a cutting-edge composting system designed to handle organic waste generated across its properties, including over 2,000 residences, hotels, golf courses, restaurants, and the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). The Earth Flow composting system, developed by Green Mountain Technologies, is fully automated and enclosed, offering an eco-friendly solution that processes between 1,400 and 3,000 metric tons of organic and garden waste annually.

The system rapidly converts food scraps and trimmings into nutrient-rich compost for use throughout the resort. By processing waste on-site, Grupo Puntacana aims to significantly lower its landfill usage and transportation-related environmental impacts. The resort expects to divert 70–80% of its waste from landfills through this initiative, combined with other efforts such as its waste recovery facility (CENVAREE).

What sets Earth Flow apart is its odor-controlled, enclosed design, which maintains optimal oxygen levels through aeration channels and uses an industrial auger for continuous mixing. A biofilter captures any remaining odors, making large-scale composting feasible even in a resort setting.

Grupo Puntacana sees this project as a major step toward becoming a zero-waste community, with future potential to expand composting services to neighboring resorts. The facility’s modular layout allows for future growth and customizable aeration and mixing functions. Project manager Van Calvez praised the company’s environmental leadership, calling it “an inspiration.”
