Óscar Abreu brings Dominican art to life in Hamburg

Hamburg, Germany.- Dominican artist Óscar Abreu captivated audiences in Hamburg with a live painting performance during the Cultural Night of the Second Dominican Week in Germany. Recognized as the most sought-after living visual artist in the Dominican Republic since 2021, Abreu once again impressed an international crowd that included diplomats and cultural figures with an emotionally charged and symbolically rich work. Among those present were violinist José Francisco Colón, German Foreign Ministry official Annette Walter, and neurosurgeon Eric Suero Molina, with the event organized by the Dominican Embassy in Germany and supported by German and Dominican institutions.

In real time, Abreu produced a 20-piece series titled The Story of María Moñito in Hamburg, using his signature psycho-expressionist style. The works reflected the emotional depth and cultural resilience of the Dominican people, with bold colors and symbolic forms. One standout piece, María Moñito in Hamburg, reimagines a beloved Dominican character as a symbol of non-traditional beauty and everyday dignity. Another, Mujer con Rolos, challenges stereotypes and honors the unseen strength of Dominican women. Abreu described his painting process as emotional and confessional, with each element representing both pain and hope.

This performance marked Abreu’s first artistic intervention in Germany, and the works created will be featured in his upcoming book I am Oscar Abreu / Manifesto of Psycho-Expressionism, adding both artistic and documentary value. With more than 45 solo exhibitions across major cities in the Americas and the Caribbean, Abreu continues to position himself as a central figure in Dominican contemporary art, using his work to foster cultural exchange and promote diplomacy through artistic expression.
