Government to enforce new public sector schedules to ease traffic congestion

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican government announced new staggered work schedules for public institutions as part of its “Transit Change with You” plan, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Greater Santo Domingo. The initiative, led by the Transportation Cabinet, introduces two main shifts—7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.—for general government offices, with additional split shifts (7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) for institutions serving over 1,000 people daily.

Alexandra Cedeño, Director of Mobility at INTRANT, emphasized that over 70% of morning traffic stems from work and school travel, much of it concentrated around 8:00 a.m., creating severe bottlenecks. She explained that the staggered hours aim to distribute this flow more evenly and reduce the stress of commuting during peak times.

The plan, developed with support from the French Development Agency and implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Public Administration, forms part of a broader government effort involving INTRANT, DIGESETT, and other agencies to improve traffic conditions and urban mobility in the capital.
