Santo Domingo.- Carolina Mejía, mayor of Santo Domingo, was honored with the First Class White Nun Medal by the Guatemalan Embassy in the Dominican Republic. The medal, presented by Guatemala’s Minister of National Defense, Henry Sáenz, symbolizes the strong friendship between the two nations.
The award ceremony took place during the unveiling of Guatemala’s national orchid, the White Nun, at Plaza República on the Malecón promenade in Santo Domingo. Mejía expressed gratitude, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the two countries in maintaining this commemorative space.
Guatemala’s military attaché, Brigadier General Edgar Rolando, praised Mejía and her team for their support and explained that the White Nun Medal is an honorary distinction recognizing meritorious service to the state. Other distinguished recipients included former Guatemalan ambassador Javier Zepeda and Brigadier General Ambiorix Cepeda.
The plaza, inaugurated on September 15, 2024, near Santo Domingo’s city hall, features a quetzal statue, flagpoles representing both countries, benches, decorative gravel, and a commemorative plaque, celebrating the bond between Guatemala and the Dominican Republic.
