Santo Domingo.- In light of the denial that Dominican airline Arajet received to open 42 new routes to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), the Dominican government has asked the airport’s management to approve the request, allowing for increased connectivity between the two countries.
This was stated by Minister of Tourism David Collado during an event marking the inaugural Arajet flight connecting Santo Domingo with the U.S. cities of New York and Newark — making it the first Dominican airline to establish this route in 30 years.
“On behalf of the President of the Republic to Newark Airport, the Dominican Republic requests that the 42 routes requested by Arajet be granted, because we need more flights,” said Minister Collado.
Before the official’s request, Arajet CEO and founder Victor Miguel Pacheco Mendez revealed that the airline had recently requested 42 more flights per week from Santiago, Santo Domingo, and Punta Cana to EWR Airport, but the request was rejected.
However, Pacheco Méndez stated that Arajet will continue to work on growing and expanding its presence in Newark to ensure that the entire Dominican community can benefit from its services.
“Offering this route has always been our main objective since we began operations. New Jersey and New York are the areas with the largest concentration of Dominican diaspora and are also the states that bring the most tourists to the Dominican Republic,” he said.
