Prominent lawyer arrested in connection with fugitive kingpin

Santo Domingo.- Theformer president of Dominican Republic’s Bar Association was detained Friday andtaken to a jail in Ciudad Nueva courthouse, charged with forging documents he allegedlyobtained from Interpol to derail an international arrest warrant against thenotorious fugitive Jesus Cabrera Ruiz and his wife Claribel Amparo.

Diego -Babado- Torreswas arrested on a bench warrant charging him with the filing a forged documentat the Interpol office in Santo Domingo, to lift the high alert andinternational capture order for Cabrera, who allegedly heads one of the country´s bloodiest drug cartels, whichallegedly operates in La Romana (east).

Deputy Justiceminister Bolivar Sanchez had requested the warrant against Torres, who was alsocaught on camera firing shots during the assault on the headquarters of the PRDparty in January, 26, 2013.
