UN says Dominican Rep. fights poverty effectively: Presidency

Santo Domingo.- The headof the UN´s Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD), of the Economicand Social Affairs Dept. on Tuesday said the Dominican Republic is showing theworld effective ways to combat poverty.

Daniela Bas said theresults of the country´s public policies that put the people first, can serve asa reference for many nations and stressed the Dominican government´s inclusionof women, youngsters and people of all ages at all levels of participation.

"If we don’t makesure that people feel good, then why are we concentrating so much on issueslike the economy and climate change," she said.

According to a statementrelease from the Office of the Presidency, Bas said the social participationwhich takes people into account should be the first target in the fight againstpoverty as Dominican Republic is doing.

The UN official spokein the panel on Social Inclusion Policies in the Dominican Republic, held in theUnited Nations, to mark International Day to Eradicate Poverty.

Bas urged the DominicanGovernment to continue to enact public policies that prioritize people.
