Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) on Monday said of the RD$1.25 billion it spent from 2009 to 2012, RD$191 million was given to then presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía in the last election campaign, although the Accounts Chamber said the political organization failed to submit any of the required documents during its audit.
It said it spent RD$185.1 million during then president Ramón Alburquerque’s tenure from January to July 2009 and other amounts in conventions and allocations to congressional and municipal candidates.
At a press conference at PRD headquarters headed by its president Miguel Vargas, PRD spokesman Victor Gomez said despite the fact that all documents had been stolen during the assault on its offices on January 27, 2013, the PRD has submitted its annual report on its expenses to the Central Electoral Board (JCE).
He said records detail the use of funds obtained from the Central Electoral Board, in addition to contributions received in the period.
Gómez, after handing out a document to reporters, said Alburquerque spent RD$122.9 million and RD$24.5 million; credit transfers from JCE funds, and a loan with Banco Popular Dominicano for RD$36.9 million, for a total of RD$185.1 million, among other expenses.
