Dajabón, Dominican Republic.- Border Security (Cesfront) on Monday bolstered its vigilance along the border area next to Dajabón (northwest), amid threats of protests in nearby Ouanaminthe against alleged abuses suffered by Haitians in the Dominican Republic.
The threat of protests come just days after the incidents in Port-au-Prince, where the Dominican Consulate was attacked and the Dominican flag was torn down.
Army regional commander Gen. Carlos M. Aguirre said surveillance was expanded with antiriot troops and equipment.
Meanwhile Haiti Police and UN Peacekeepers (Minustah) beefed up patrols near the Dominican consulate in the Haitian town on threats that it will be sent on fire.
Local media report that the protesters had gathered in Ouanaminthe around noon Monday, as patrols were increased at the location.
The tension forced the binational market to open partially, as fewer vendors and buyers came to Dajabón for the activity held Mondays and Fridays.
