Haiti vows to protect Dominican Republic consulates

Santo Domingo.- Haiti Foreign minister Pierre Duly Brutus on Wednesday said measures have been taken to ensure the safety of Dominican consulates in his country, whose temporary closure was announced by the Dominican Foreign Ministry just hours earlier.

He also said Haiti ambassador Fritz Cineas will meet with president Danilo Medina and Foreign minister Andrés Navarro to inform them of the measures. "The Haitian government affirms and informs the Dominican government that all measures have been taken to ensure the safety of its consulates."

Brutus said he will meet with Navarro in Guatemala on March 10 to convey Haiti’s official position.

The Dominican government’s decision to temporarily shutter its consular offices comes after safety concerns for their staff, voiced by Santo Domingo,

The Dominican Foreign Ministry said it temporarily closed its consulates in Haiti in the heels of "recurrent" attacks on those facilities, which in its view poses a risk to their staff.
