Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s ruling party (PLD) on Thursday withdrew the bill leading to the Political Parties Law, just one day after approval by the lower Chamber in a first roll call, and which drew wide rebuke from various sectors that demanded changes.
PLD deputies spokesman Ruben Maldonado said the lower Chamber withdrew the proposed legislation, according to articles of the Rules of Procedure.
The lawmakers voted 144 to 7 to repeal the bill.
Maldonado blamed the PRD and PRM opposition parties for stalling the legislation."These characters in these parties, starting with Hipólito Mejía (PRM presidential hopeful) are responsible for the stagnation."
In a press release, the lawmaker added that he “deeply regrets that one point of divergence with the PRD cast asunder what in principle the committee had agreed to approve this bill."
