Official fuels ruling party’s reelection row

Santo Domingo.- Public Works minister Gonzalo Castillo on Friday fueled the row over president Danilo Medina’s possible bid to remain in office, because in his view, "reelection is unstoppable."

When asked about former president Leonel Fernandez’s announcement Thursday that he’ll seek a fourth term, Castillo said the people are sovereign to decide and reform the Constitution to pave the way for Medina to seek the ruling PLD party’s presidential candidacy.

Citing recent polls, the official said 86% of the population agrees with a Constitutional reform to allow Medina to seek reelection.

He affirmed however that there are no confrontation between supporters of Fernandez and Medina.
