Forest fire threatens highland town; Environment ‘gains control’

Santo Domingo.- A forest fire has been menacing a town near the Sierra de Bahoruco mountain range, Independencia province, (southwest) since Wednesday, the Environment Ministry said Friday.

In a statement, Environment said the fire is in a control stage with embers at hot spots still to douse, in the community of Los Arroyos.

Environmental said its crews of 160 firefighters joined by forest rangers work to control the blaze, and will station a brigade on site as precaution.

"Until the end of Friday afternoon the fire is almost extinguished, the work of our staff has been appropriate and effective to achieve control," the Environment Ministry said, adding that the fire would be fully extinguished within hours.
