Dominican president ‘needs to buy’ 20 lawmakers to run again

Santo Domingo.- The spokesman for the opposition PRM party in the Chamber of Deputies on affirmed Wednesday that president Danilo Medina "needs to buy” 20 of his colleagues with taxpayers’ money to amend the Constitution, which in his view would contradict his voiced commitment to transparency.

Nelson Arroyo warned that Medina would throw overboard his talk of ethical and moral governance if he opts to run for a second term.

The lawmaker noted that behind the ruling PLD party’s infighting, especially pitting its two top leaders over its presidential candidacy, is the fact that Medina’s reelection in the hands of former president Leonel Fernandez, who also looks to return to the National Palace.
