Santo Domingo.- Customs director Fernando Fernandez on Tuesday said the bill to amend the Customs Act was a promise senator Reinaldo Pared made to benefit courier companies and that "and in fact that law offered, sold and bought."
"The initiative is by senators Reinaldo Pared and Charlie Mariotti, his campaign manager. But remember that then two more laws were put in there. They also put competitiveness (law), it was sold as a package," said the official, quoted by elcaribe.com.do.
Fernandez, who didn’t mince words warned that the country is signatory of World Customs Organization and WTO agreements, and if it amends the legal framework it should have several objectives and one of them is to be more efficient.
"Another purpose could be to collect more, improve security (Customs is also border protection). But we don’t know what to look for with the new legal framework which they want to impose on us," the official added, but didn’t name those whom would “impose” the legislation.
