Dominican Republic leader can opt for reelection

Santo Domingo.- The Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday approved in two consecutive roll calls the bill to amend Article 124 of the Constitution to pave the way for a sitting president’s reelection.

The legislation counted with the votes of all but three lawmakers of the ruling party (PLD) , most of the opposition party (PRD) and all of the minority pro-government PRSC.

Despite warnings to its members against supporting the bill just hours before, two deputies of the majority opposition party (PRM) also voted to pass the legislation without change, already approved by the Senate last week.

The bill will now go to president Danilo Medina, who’s expected to sign it into law.
