Dajabón, Dominican Republic.- Haitian officials at the border with Dominican Republic continue seizing products their national buy at the market held Mondays and Fridays, on claims they’re contaminated.
Haitians complain of payoffs of as much as RD$5,000 to guards on the Haiti side to avert confiscation of their purchases.
Local media report tension among Haitian buyers and Dominican sellers, who say they’re taking huge losses.
The vendors arrived with their wares as usual but found fewer buyers, who fear being stripped of their items.
Quoted by listin.com.do, Dominican vendor Juan Rodríguez said a Haiti Customs inspector charges money to let his customers take their goods to the other side, whereas Haitian national Liu Pie said a “mafia” confiscated five sacks of vegetables and other items when she refused to pay off Haitian inspectors.
