33% of the immigrants work in agro sector: Survey

Santo Domingo.- 33 percent of employed immigrants work inagriculture while 24 percent work in construction, the two sectors account for thehighest number of employed immigrants, of which 87.3 percent are Haitian.

The United States is the second biggest source ofimmigrants in the country (2.6%), followed by Spain (1.3%), according to theNational Survey of Immigrants (ENI) conducted by the National StatisticalOffice.

The survey says immigrants will account for around 5.4percent of Dominican Republic’s total population by 2012.

It says most of the immigrants work in low-skill labor,especially agriculture and the construction, and that more than 25% cannot reador write.
