Ruling PLD proclaims Medina as candidate

Santo Domingo.- Theruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) proclaimed president Danilo Medina as its official candidate for the May 2016 presidential elections at yesterday’s Delegates Assembly in SantoDomingo.

After beingproclaimed and sworn in by the president of the PLD and former president Leonel Fernández, Medina swore “before God andthe people” that this would be the last time he runs for president.

In his speech todelegates, Medina said that the PLD must continue at the helm of the state forthe good of the country, and that nothing would stop the Dominican Republic’smomentum.

He called for party unity and declared that in order to win the people’shearts there was no need to lie, hate or harm: “Help your colleaguesunconditionally, don’t leave them on their own, approach the people withhumility and without arrogance, whoever has the truth does not need to harm orhate”. He added: “It is time to leave the grievances and bitterness behind”.

The president also thanked the former pre-candidateswho had sacrificed their aspirations to support him and promised them thattheir time would come.

Danilo Medina was granted additional powers to formalliances for the 2016 elections. The pact signed by the Political Committeemembers in May was also ratified. The event was supervised by the CentralElectoral Board (JCE) Inspectorate Juan Bautista Taveras Gómez, Yolanda Aristy andJuan Aníbal Marte, who confirmed the attendance of 74.6% or 2,105 members of the PLD, whichhas 2,831 members on its register.
