Dominican Republic must wake up to regional realities: Think tank

Santo Domingo.- To learn of current regional issues ranging from the post US -CAFTA trade relations, Cuba´s entry into the regional context, and the DR-Haiti situation at the crossroads , the Dominican Republic Program of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, (FLACSO-RD) hosted the dialogue "Dominican Republic in the regional context: A view from the outside."

Event keynote speaker David Lewis, academician and consultant, focused on international politics.

FLACSO-RD director Ivan Ogando said in recent months the regional scenario has been characterized by rapid dynamics of unexpected changes that have redefined a new correlation of interests and ties among countries of the hemisphere and particularly Latin Central and the Caribbean.

He said the national sectors, especially academia, should promote debates and discussions on the new reality, to generate conceptual inputs that contribute to define strategies and policies to position the country as a regional benchmark, ensuring that the country can have greater influence and impact on trade, economic, political and cultural aspects.

Lewis said the dialogue initiative from FLACSO – RD aims to analyze, from an external perspective, the challenges facing the Dominican Republic in the regional context, which have become increasingly challenging and require fast, precise and efficient responses.
