Santo Domingo.- The president of the CommonwealthRoundtable in the Dominican Republic, Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas, hailed theMalaysian foreign minister Anifah Aman’s recent visit to the country, saying that thismarked the start of a new stage in relations between the Dominican Republic andthe southeast Asian country.
Gonzalez Nicolas made this statement at a luncheonheld in the visitor’s honor at the Santo Domingo Country Club. He said that theMalaysian foreign minister’s visit to the Dominican Republic as part of histour of the Americas was well timed.
He said that the visit provided an opportunity to showhim the attractions that the Dominican Republic has to offer in terms ofinvestment and exports in the agricultural, industrial and service sectors.
During the Malaysian foreign minister’s first visit tothe Dominican Republic, he was accompanied by leading business representativesfrom his country from sectors including property, energy, hotels andmanufacturing.
As a result of the meeting specific opportunities were identified in the areas of property investment, tourism, gas and petroleumexploration, aquaculture and furniture production for export manufactured withMalaysian rubber.
At the end of the meeting, Foreign Minister AnifahAman addressed his audience and thanked them for the warm welcome he hadreceived during his brief visit, and encouraged Dominican businesspeople tovisit Malaysia in reciprocation for his visit to the Dominican Republic.
Malaysia, with a population of 30 million, is a producer ofoil, gas, rubber and African palm, strategically located in Southeast Asia. Itcurrently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The luncheon event was attended by the president ofthe Dominican Association of Industries (AIRD) Campos de Moya, the president ofthe National Hotels and Restaurants Association (ASONAHORES) Simón Suarez, thepresident of the Mining and Oil Sectors Chamber of the Dominican Republic (CAMIPE)José Sena, the executive vice president of the Dominican Electricity Industry Association(ADIE) Milton Morrison, and the president of the Vehicle Importers’ Association,Fernando Villanueva.
