Dominican Republic´s leading parties pact ends decades of dispute

Santo Domingo.- DominicanRepublic´s ruling party (PLD) and leading opposition (PRD) organization putaside decades of dispute Monday, with apact to run as allies in next year´s general elections.

President DaniloMedina and PRD president Miguel Vargas signed a four-page document announcing jointpresidential, congressional and municipal candidacies, but doesn’t specify politicalformulas, the names of the candidates for the elected posts other than Medina´ssecond bid.

The PLD and PRD agreedto a wide ranging pact for the elections of May 15, with joint candidates in mostof the various levels.

Women

Medina and Vargas alsoagreed to comply with the law on electoral quotas for women when the correspondingcandidates are nominated.
