Dominican belles-cumlawmakers debate pressing issues in Congress

Santo Domingo.-Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martinez on Wednesday headed a legislative "session" featuring 15candidates of the Miss World beauty contest, as part of the "Deputy for aday" program, debating the growth in femicides and other crimes and Falcondo´scontroversial plan to mine Loma Miranda, among other hot button topics.

The Chamberof Deputies website said the Miss World 2015 candidates began the sessionvice-chaired by Miss World 2014 Dhio Moreno and other belles, with a discussionabout Congress´ inner workings.

Martinezexplained the Lower Chamber´s functions with representatives from 32 provincesand from abroad.

One of the"deputies for a day" asked about the role Congress plays to deal withthe alleged smear campaign against Dominican Republic, in the heels of thegovernment program to legalize he mostly Haitian migrants.
