Townsfolk protest closing of Dominican bauxite mine

Pedernales, DominicanRepublic.- Workers, supervisors, drivers and other people linked to the region´sbauxite mine held a candlelight vigil Tuesday night in the town´s main streetsto demand that the government extend the deadline issued by the Energy and MinesMinistry two weeks ago to shutter extractions beyond October

Neighborhood boards alsojoined the protest against the announced closure of extractions of DOVEMCO ´s bauxitemine at the village Las Mercedes.

"If they closethe mine where will we go and what will we do? The tourism announced inPedernales doesn’t have the means, especially now and by the end of 2015, when familiesneed to produce to survive the situation," said Mother Federation Centers presidentMiladis Altagracia Perez, quoted by listin.com.do.

Some representativesof community and social organizations say the closure of DOVENCO´s operations wouldjeopardize the families whose livelihood depends on the bauxite mine.
