Warsaw.- The Polish Roman Catholic Church buried theformer papal diplomatic envoy who died before facing trial forsexual abuse of minors and possession of child pornography. Silence andcontemplation replaced the sermon at Saturday’s funeral of Jozef Wesolowski inthe village of Czorsztyn in southern Poland, according to local news reports.
Excerpts of a letter he had written to his relatives,in which he protested his innocence, were read out during the burial: “I am accused ofdeeds I never committed,” it stated.
Wesolowski died at the age of 67 in hisapartment in the Vatican on August 27th, while awaiting trial at acourt there. When the process began he had already been expelled from thechurch hierarchy and from the priesthood.
Wesolowski was accused of sexually abusing adolescentboys when he was papal nuncio in the Dominican Republic.
