Dominican Army troops kill Haitian as checkpoint stop turns fatal

Santo Domingo.- Armytroops on Monday killed a Haitian national after shooting at a pickup truckcarrying alleged undocumented immigrants in Guayubín township, northeastern Montecristiprovince.

The victim wasidentified as Clerius Filemon, 33, while his compatriot Jimmy Lisime, 25, was reportedlyhurt when their vehicle sped away despite that the driver was ordered to stop.

The Army said thesoldiers involved in the incident have been detained for investigation.

"We will not allowexcesses of any kind. If the investigation determines that they acted contraryto the rules, you can be assured they will be submitted to justice to answerfor the occurrence," the Army Command said in a statement, adding that itsIntelligence Dept questioned those involved in the case.
