Santo Domingo.- Activists of the grassrootsmovement Poder Ciudadano (Citizen Power) took to the streets again Wednesday,when they formed the now recurrent “Human Chain Against Corruption in the DominicanRepublic.”
In their latest protest the group also demands lower gas prices toreflect the plunge in international oil prices, in addition to punishing governmentcorruption and the eradication of impunity.
"Regular gasoline costs the equivalent of RD$39.50 in the US but sellsfor RD$156.40 in the Dominican Republic; four times more expensive. This is arobbery and abuse against the people,” said Mario Arturo Fernandez, speakingfor the demonstrators gathered at 1pm in Duarte Park.
The protesters, including members of the We are all Santiago Society (SST)gathered to form the human chain with pickets chanting slogans to demand lower pricesat the pumps and on cooking gas.
