Feisty lawmaker makes bid for presidency official

Santo Domingo.- The minority party Alliance for Democracy(APD) on Sunday selected chose independent deputy Minou Tavarez Mirabal as itspresidential candidate for the May 15 general elections.

Tavares, one of the country’s most active lawmakers, was approvedunanimously by the 131 delegates of the APD assembly, supervised by CentralElectoral Board inspectors.

The delegates also gave her the power to choose her ticketmate and forge pacts and alliances with other political groups.

They also gave APD president Max Puig the authority to submitthe candidates to congressional and municipal posts.
