Dominican watchdog sticks it to baseball homer derby scam

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s official watchdog (ProConsumidor)on Wednesday went where no other agency has gone before; announcing penalties againstlocal and regional professional baseball leagues for violating Law 358-0 “onthe right to accurate, complete, timely, adequate and verifiable information inpromoting the event, Home Run Derby.”

The agency announced penalties against Dominican Republic’sprofessional baseball league (lidom) and the Caribbean’s professional baseball association(CBPC), for "multiple violations of the Law 358-0 on the right toaccurate, complete, timely, adequate and verifiable information in promotingthe event Home Run Derby."

In a statement, ProConsumidor said the two organizations mustpay a fine of RD$600,000 (more than US$20,000) and reimburse everyone who boughttickets and decided not to attend the event. It said despite announcing that DavidOrtiz, Miguel Cabrera and Robinson Cano would be part of the event, the twoorganizations failed to notify that they wouldn’t, “in a public and timelymanner and through their respective channels.”

It adds that the evidence against the two organizations wascompiled from TV ads, the press and other media.
