Major opposition party taps woman as running mate

Santo Domingo.- Although the opposition PRM party had announced an activityfor 5pm to reveal the ticket mate for the May elections, candidate LuisAbinader went ahead and tweeted that his running mate would be CarolinaMejia, daughter of former president Hipolito Mejia.

The tweet however was erased shortly after.

FILE.Within just 24 hours Dominican Republic’stwo major political parties announced the selection of women as the running matesfor their particular presidential candidates.

On Monday major opposition PRM party presidential candidateLuis Abinader tweeted that Carolina Mejia, daughter of former presidentHipolito Mejia, will be his ticket mate for the May 15 general elections.

Less than 24 hours before that, the ruling PLD partypresidential candidate and president Danilo Medina had announced that MargaritaCedeño will again be his candidate for the vice presidency.

"For me it is a source of joy to present@carolinamejiag as my companion to the vice-presidency," Abinader tweeted.

Carolina Mejia’s name had been mentioned as Abinader’srunning mate for days, with pundits noting that her presence on the PRM ticketguarantees Hipolito Mejia’s backing and those of his supporters.
