New York.- "Itwas about time" for much of Upper Manhattan and Washington Heights’ Dominicanpopulation and Latino neighborhoods to have one of their own as head of thelocal precinct of the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

Raymundo Mundo’s designation comes after decades ofrequests by area community activists and political leaders that the NYPD to designatea Hispanic precinct commander.

The NYPD announced Mundo’s appointment of the Dominican-PuertoRican captain last week, to one of the most conflictive and criticized police precincts.

A veteran of manyyears in the force, Mundo’s designation at once drew praise from those who areaware of the behavior of commanders and officers in the 34th Precinct, locatedon Broadway with 186th Street.

He is the third commander of Dominican origin to head aprecinct, after Pedro Pichardo in the 33rd precinct, and hissubsequent replacement Wilson Aramboles.
