Industrialists urge government to end Fenatrado monopoly

Santo Domingo.- Herreraand Santo Domingo Province Industries Association (AEIH) presidentAntonio Taveras urged the government, the private sector and thepolitical organizations to start legal proceedings against thetruckers’ association (Fenatrado).

Accordingto a press release published by Diario Libre, Taveras describedthe truckers’association cargo monopoly as "oneof the greatest distortions in the Dominican Republic´s economy."

TheAEIH president also referred to the so-called unions as very powerfulcompanies that impose their own law on the ports, subjecting businessowners to their rates and conditions. "This group is used to endingtheir differences by appealing to violence, blackmail and vandalism."

Fenatradopresident Blas Peralta is currently being held in pre-trial custody,accused of the murder of former Santo Domingo State University (UASD) rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet over a dispute on elected posts in San Cristobal province.
