After halted shipment, nickel miner scurries for operating permit

Santo Domingo.- Executives of Falconbridge on Tuesday visitedthe Energy and Mines Ministry where they said they’ll submit the needed documentsto expedite the issuing of the license and resume ferronickel extractions,after Americano Nickel Ltd acquired a majority stake.

The announcement comes just days after Energy and Mines ministerAntonio Isa said he had repeatedly requested those documents from Falconbridge.

Company president Ioannis Moutafis, PR Mario Davalos andCFO Gabriel Rodriguez met with the agency’s legal and polity officials.

The meeting also comes after Isa said four containers of ferronickelwere prevented from being shipped from Haina Port on Monday, citing the companyhasn’t complied with operating requirements.

Energy and Mines reiterated that despite the Government’sinterest in that mining at Bonao resumes since benefits the province, Falconbridgemust provide guarantees and comply strictly.
