Major League Baseball has its first Dominican umpire

Santo Domingo.- Ramon De Jesus Ferrer will make MajorLeague Baseball history on Friday when he adds his name to the crew of umpires whowill make the calls in the Cleveland Indians-Detroit Tigers game.

Ferrer will be the first Dominican man-in-blue that reachthe top MLB level in the Caribbean country’s history.

The debut adds to Dominican Republic’s achievement in themajors, where Osvaldo ‘Ozzie” Virgil was the local pioneer in the American Pastime.

"I became an umpire at the hand of Mónico Zayas, whoin the Sports Ministry of Santo Domingo, gave me the opportunity to work indifferent amateur leagues, such as little leaguers up to the independentbaseball league," said Ferrer, who began his umpire career in SantoDomingo in early 2002.
