Dominican tourism phenix rises from the ashes

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.- The Puerto Plata destinationstarts signaling strong response to private and public investments in theAtlantic coast town in recent years, awakening from decades of neglect.

So far in 2016, tourist arrivals via Puerto Plata’s InternationalAirport jumped 11.6% compared to the same period last year, while the flow of cruisepassengers continues to climb at Amber Cove.

The panorama was laid out by representatives and officialsof the local tourism sector, headed by Puerto Plata Tourism Cluster (CTDPP) presidentand CEO Máximo Iglesias, and executive director Jakaira Cid, as part of thefair DATE 2016, being held at the Paradisus Palma Real Convention Center, inBavaro, Punta Cana.

They said the incorporation of new airlines Eurowings,Nordwind, Dominican Pawa and opening new frequencies such as Katowice (Poland),Port of Spain, Boston, Charlotte, and Sheremetyevo, Moscow.

Quoted by acento.com.do, Iglesias said tourism’s growth hasreached the North last year and the first months of 2016. He said innovationsin Puerto Plata’s attractions have been the result of strong public-private partnershipand the unification of criteria for all sectors linked to the province’s development.

Amber Cove stride

For his part, Tourism provincial director LorenzoSancassani said Amber Cove cruise port has sparked great strides in the NorthCoast’s tourism revival. “Since its opening on October 6, 2015 he has received56 cruise ships with a total of 224.683 passengers.”
