Dominican Republic hero dies at 96

Santo Domingo.- Thelast survivor of the assassination of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, Army Gen.® Antonio Imbert Barreras died early Tuesday at 96, exactly 55 years and one day since the historic event.

Barreras was admitted to the CEDIMAT Medical Center with variousailments.

He was Dominican Republic’s de facto president in 1965, amember of the group that assassinated Trujillo in 1961, and took part in thecoup to oust president Juan Bosch two years later, which unleashed the 1965 Revolution.

Assassination

He survived being shot several times on March 21, 1967, ashe was driving his vehicle along a busy avenue in the city of Santo Domingo.

Career

Barrera was Armed Forces Minister from 1986 to 1988 forthen president Joaquin Balaguer, and was appointed in 1989Chairman of the Boardof the Rosario Dominicana gold mine, which went bankrupt during his tenure.
