Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry on Tuesday releasedthe Quick Start Program (QSP) to implement a strategic approach to manage chemicalsand hazmat (SAICM) in the Dominican Republic.
Environment said the document states a rational andcomprehensive approach to manage the country’s chemicals and hazardous waste.
“The plan involves entities such as the Ministry ofDefense, Agriculture, Labor, Public Health, Energy and Mining, and Customs, whichin each of their areas assume the tasks and commitments in defense and order tofulfill the objectives,” it said in a statement.
It said the initiative aims to develop and assess the nationalinfrastructure in relation to the legal, institutional, administrative andtechnical management aspects of chemicals.
The entity said it also aims to continue to develop andanalyze the nature, degree of availability and use of chemicals in the country,through the life cycle of chemical substances.
“The project was conducted through the Department ofManagement of Chemical Substances and Hazardous Waste Management EnvironmentalQuality Deputy Minister of Environmental Management, coordinated by ZoilaGonzalez, with the Strategic Approach to Management International Chemicals (SAICM)and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), from 2012to 2014.”
“Environment minister Bautista Rojas sponsors the initiative,and intends to establish a system of national governance for SAICMimplementation including concrete mechanisms for multi-sectoral collaborationand participation of stakeholders.”
