Embezzlement probe targets former collaborator of Medina

Santo Domingo.- prosecutor National District Yeni BereniceReynoso on Thursday said an investigation has been launched into allegedbribery and embezzlement by State Supervisory Engineers Office (OISOE) formerdirector Miguel Pimentel Kareh, formerly a close collaborator of presidentDanilo Medina.

Reynoso said evidence collected during the investigation intothe failed Peravia bank linked Pimentel Kareh to the crime.

"We have an investigation in that regard. It’s aseparate investigation by the fact that the evidence suggests that the actionswere committed. What could be described as a crime did occur in the context of Peraviabank but in the part having to do with the La Union insurance company," shesaid.

Reynoso said once the investigation into Peravia’s morethan RD$1.4 billion fraud was concluded, a second phase started which links PimentelKareh. "The investigation in that regard isn’t closed, the investigationis open. If the Anticorruption Prosecutor doesn’t assume that part, the Officeof the National District Prosecutor is going to continue it."
