Fugitive in New Jersey sex assault captured in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- A man who was on the run for six years after being convicted of committing a sexual assault in Garfield, New Jersey, was caught in the Dominican Republic and returned to Bergen County this week, northjersey.com reported.

According to the report, Luis M. Caraballo, 34, had been a fugitive since 2010, when he failed to appear for sentencing in state Superior Court in Hackensack.

Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino said in a release that Caraballo, who was on the county’s most wanted list of fugitives, was extradited from the Dominican Republic but did not specify when he was taken into custody.

Caraballo’s conviction stems from a 2004 sexual assault charge out of Garfield, He was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in state prison in 2007. But his initial conviction was overturned on appeal in 2009 and his case was sent back to Superior Court for another trial, northjersey.com reported.
