Arena boos referees in decision against Dominican boxer

Rio de Janeiro.- HectorGarcia Mora, one of Dominican Republic’s few hopefuls for a medal, was thevictim of an unpopular decision in the 56-kilo boxing division of the Rio Games,defeated in a split decision 2-1 to Belarusian Dzmitry Asanau on Wednesday inthe Riocentro arena.

García, 24, and runner-up at the Pan American GamesToronto-2015, nocked his opponent to the canvas in the first round, and appearedto take lead in the second, but slowed during the third and apparently influencedthe judges’ decision.

In protest the fans booed the decision at length, to noavail.

The pugilist from Barahona (west) was eliminated in hisfirst appearance in the Olympics, leaving the Dominican Republic with only one boxerin the Games, where flyweight Leonel de los Santos enters the ring for hisfirst bout today Thursday.
