Iconic Cuban leader Fidel Castro turns 90

Havana.- Both loved as a hero and hated as a dictator, Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro turned 90 on Saturday. During his 48 years in power, he defied 10 US presidents, but now the island is different, for the United States is no longer officially Cuba’s enemy.

Considered as one of the giant figures of modern history, Fidel Castro retired from public life in 2006 due to health problems and formally transferred the presidency to his brother Raul in 2008.

On the occasion of his 90th birthday, the legendary leader wrote a letter thanking Cubans for their support and did not miss the chance to criticize US President Barack Obama for not apologizing to Japan during a trip to Hiroshima in May.
