RD$100M to the rescue of Santo Domingo’s Malecon

Santo Domingo.- “Todaybegins a new stage for Dominican Republic’s Malecon,” National District mayor DavidCollado affirmed Monday to mark the start of works to recover Santo Domingo’sfamous seaside boulevard, at a cost of RD$100 million

Also known as George Washington Av., El Malecon will berevamped along a three-kilometer span that includes construction of a parkinglot, renovation of adjacent parks, and repairs on sidewalks, curbs, benches,storm drainage and street lighting.

Collado said also announced the deployment of 100 municipalpolice to ensure tourists’ safety.

He said the work should conclude in about four months, whenthe Fray Antonio de Montesinos monument will be renovated to become a Tainomuseum.

The official, accompanied by managers of several area hotels,said the contractor Malespín will be in charge of the work, which “seeks torescue an area that is abandoned, with urban sprawl, and has prompted thehotels to head uptown."
