UK eyes expansion of Dominican agro exports

Santo Domingo.- Agriculture minister ÁngelEstévez on Tuesday received an United Kingdom official delegation to establish bilateralexchange, export local products and strengthen Dominican Republic’s productionsystems.

The British parliamentary and trade mission expressedan interest in bolstering ties and training for the country’s technical staff, toincrease exports of products such as bananas, mangoes and other items, as wellas strengthening the Dominican sanitary systems.

In the British delegation figured GarethJohnson, Lord Bruce of Bennachie, Sir David Amess, Rosie Cooper, BaronessGloria Hooper, and Matthew Webb from the British Embassy in the country, aswell as Nicole Jacobo and Gustavo Sosa, representing Dominican ambassador inGreat Britain, Federico Cuello.

"The commission made several visits torice, banana and other crops, highlighting the quality of the nationalproduction and appreciating a perfect scenario to open the doors tonegotiations and exchanges with domestic producers to bring local products tothe UK, especially those which they cannot produce," Estévez said.

"It’s important for local authorities tomake our country healthy in terms of production, in compliance with theprovisions of president Danilo Medina to prepare the national agriculturalsector to be a source of foreign exchange earnings, with a special emphasis onnational quality," the Agriculture Minister said in a statement.
